Exynos 7904 vs Snapdragon 670 vs Snapdragon 675 Comparison

Q: Will SD 670 survive with the arrival of Exynos 7904 and Snapdragon 675, let’s find out in this Exynos 7904 vs Snapdragon 670 vs Snapdragon 675 comparison.

The mid-end smartphones market is much competitive than high-end and low-end because of the countless smartphones fighting to survive for the best budget yet performance price. No doubt, the latest smartphone with the latest SoC is the winner. However, there are some old SoCs which sometimes perform much better than the old phones thanks to modern tweaks and optimizations (yes, I’m talking about the good old Snapdragon 625 back in 2017). Similar to that, Snapdragon 670 did a great job as one of the best mid-end SoCs in 2018. However, with the advent of new SoCs such as its successor ‘Snapdragon 675’ and ‘Exynos 7904’, SD 670 will soon get out of the picture, but after giving a tough time to these SoCs. So without further wasting your precious time here a comparison of 2019’s demanding mid-end SoCs:

Exynos 7904 vs Snapdragon 670 vs Snapdragon 675 – CPU Comparison

Starting from the CPU side, Exynos 7904 which was announced at the start of this has an octa-core architecture based on two high-performance Cortex A73 cores running @ 1.8GHz and six low-performance Cortex A53 cores running @ 1.6GHz. It is built with a 14nm FinFET lithography and has support for LTE modem Cat.12 and Cat.13.

Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 670 (octa-core), which was released back in mid-2018, is the first chip in the series to have Kryo 360 cores, tuned by Qualcomm itself to offer better performance. Specifically, the Snapdragon 670 has two Kryo 360 Cortex-A75 high-performance cores with a maximum speed of 2GHz, accompanied by six other Cortex A55 cores at 1.7GHz, dedicated to saving energy. Moreover, there’s the power-efficient 10nm LPE process as well. As you can see, in comparison to Exynos 7904, not only Snapdragon 670 has a better frequency in both lower and high-performance cores, and the Kyro 360 architecture, but also has a way better 10nm LPE lithography. Thus one can expect incredible performance gap between both these SoCs.

Interestingly, Snapdragon 675 also beats the upper-mid SoC Snapdragon 710. If you have a choice between these two, we would prefer the SD 675

Finally, we have Snapdragon 675, which is the successor of SD 670, and just released this April. In comparison to SD 670, the architecture has been upgraded from Kyro 360 to Kyro 460. Getting in the details, it’s still an octa-core design but with two Kryo 460 Cortex A76 cores running @ 2.0GHz and six Kryo 460 Cortex A55 cores running @ 1.7GHz. Despite frequency being the same in both SoCs, SD 675 takes advantage of both the new Kyro 460 architecture and the Cortex A76 (rare, and only specific to high-end SoCs). However, it’s weird to see that the process lithography has been decreased from 10nm to 11nm LPE, and surprisingly it doesn’t affect the performance and energy efficient at all but improves it.

Exynos 7904 (Samsung M20) vs Vivo Z3 (SD 670) vs Redmi Note 7 Pro (SD 675)

So, in short, the CPU performance is in this sequence Exynos 7904 < SD 670 < SD 675, where the Snapdragon 675 being released after both SoCs takes the advantage of Cortex A76 and Kyro 460 architecture. Another thing is that SD 670 despite being one year old is able to beat Exynos 7904 which released this year.

Winner: Snapdragon 675

Exynos 7904 vs Snapdragon 670 vs Snapdragon 675 – GPU Comparison

Moving to the GPU section specifically to determine gaming and graphics performance, the Exynos 7904 uses an ARM Mali-G71 MP2 GPU with speeds of up to 770MHz and a 16nm lithograph. It has support for OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan 1.0, OpenCL 2.0 and support for DirectX 11 FL11_1 as well. It does face some problems with modern games as well.

Snapdragon 670 uses the new Adreno 615 running @ 430MHz650MHz and ramps up to 700MHz dynamically. It’s not better than SD 710’s Adreno 616 which has better process and frequency. However, with a better process and support, it easily beats Exynos 7904 despite having a lower frequency.

Last but not least is Snapdragon 675, which has downgraded GPU from Adreno 615 moving to Adreno 612. which features 14nm lithography, speeds of 850MHz, support for DirectX 12.1 and support for OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 2.0, Direct3D 12 (FL 12_1).However, Qualcomm assured that the Snapdragon 675 performs considerably better than the Snapdragon 670 in real-world scenarios. Thanks to the built-in-game enhancements, for example, reduce “janks” or stutters by over 90 percent during gameplay. However, looking at the benchmark score, the performance is still behind SD 710 and SD 670 despite having higher frequency but old process. This is the only downside of this SoC.

Despite the CPU performance being incredible even beating Snapdragon 710, SD 675  badly fails in the GPU section even getting beaten up by its ancestor SD  670.

Benchmarks of All SoCs from Snapdragon 600 series and 700 series

Thus Exynos 7904 takes advantage of Qualcomm’s only downside of using the old GPU which is Adreno 612 and 615. Snapdragon 710 GPU Adreno 616 can surely provide it a tough competition but for SD 670 and 675, that’s not the case.

Winner: Snapdragon 670

Exynos 7904 vs Snapdragon 670 vs Snapdragon 675 – Other Specs

Everything in Snapdragon 670 and Snapdragon 675 is almost the same which includes the modem, connectivity, and DSP. Both support QC 4.0+. However, the change comes in the ISP section where SD 670 has Spectra 250 while SD 675 has Spectra 250L. The only change the Spectra 250L has obtained is supporting HD slow-motion recording up to 480 fps while the previous was limited to 240 fps and the addition of 5x optical zoom. In the audio section, Qualcomm TrueWireless Stereo Plus technology and Qualcomm Aqstic technology have been introduced in SD 675.

Exynos 7904 having a different manufacturer (Samsung) still have a lot of similar to Qualcomm’s SD 670 and SD 675 such as Bluetooth 5.0, LTE Modem, Type-C & USB 3.1, and GNSS. The screen resolution support is also the same which is Full-HD+ (2520 x 1080 pixels). However, SD 670 and SD 675 has 10-Bit display support with 21:9 aspect ratio while the Exynos 7904 supports a maximum aspect ratio of 20:9. The camera department is also different. Exynos 7904 introduces the triple camera support to mid-end smartphones. Even though Snapdragon 670 and 675 support dual camera configuration only but has the highest single camera support of up to 48MP (32MP for Exynos) which is too rare to witness in a mid-end smartphone. Considering storage, Exynos only support up to eMMC 5.1 while Qualcomm provides support for both types eMMC 5.1 as well as UFS 2.1.

Winner: Snapdragon 675

Our Verdict

In this comparison of Exynos 7904 vs Snapdragon 670 vs Snapdragon 675, Snapdragon 675 emerges to be the best mid-end SoC of 2019 because of its incredible CPU performance beating even the upper mid-end SoC SD 710. It also brings a lot of features to SD 6 series. Apart from that, it has the best optimizations for gaming despite having an old and less powerful GPU then Snapdragon 670. Exynos used in Samsung flagships even though introduces the triple camera configuration, however, has the lowest CPU and GPU performance in all three SoCs.

If you are in a situation where the price difference of an SD 670 flagship and an SD 675 flagship is not that much you should go for SD 675. However, if you count a huge price gap, buying an SD 670 smartphone is an intelligent thing to do.
