Design & Appearance

If we talk about appearance, both the Redmi Note 7 and the Note 7 Pro are practically identical: front with large screen with circular notch on top, back panel with glossy finish and gradient tone where we find a vertical module of dual camera in the left corner, LED flash below it and a fingerprint sensor in the center. Both come with the same interfaces, dimensions (15.92 x 7.52 x 0.81cm)  and aspect ratio of 19.5:9. In theory, they can differentiate because the Note 7 Pro is 1g heavier (185g vs 186g) and through the available colors: Onyx Black, Ruby Red and Sapphire Blue for the Redmi Note 7; Space Black, Neptune Blue and Neptune Red for the Note 7 Pro.

But if we focus on the Huawei Nova 4, we can see that its design is totally different. Of course, as in all smartphones of this year, it keeps all the current trends, but in its own way. The “notch” is not at all a notch, it is a simple circle that incorporates the front camera and is not in the same place to which we are accustomed. We can see it in the upper left corner. The display takes up much more space, so the bevels are thinner.

However, the back panel is similar to the Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro, with the difference that we have a triple camera configuration and the Huawei logo. Another important point is that, although it has a larger screen, it is smaller and weighs less.

Screen & Display

The screen IPS LCD of the Huawei Nova 4 has a diagonal that is only one inch larger than the display IPS LCD in the Redmi Note 7 and the Redmi Note 7 Pro, which share size of 6.3 inches. Then, the Nova 4 takes the prize to the largest screen for its 6.4 inches. But sincerely the size is not everything, while the Nova 4 offers a pixel density of 398ppi and a resolution of 2310 x 1080 pixels, Redmi devices reach 409ppi and a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. Thus, even if it is not too much, the display quality of the Note 7 and Note 7 Pro screen are slightly higher quality.

Hardware & Performance

In terms of performance, the Nova 4 is powered by the octa-core Huawei HiSilicon KIRIN 970 chipset. Manufactured using the 10nm processor and with a maximum clock speed of 2.4GHz, it is on par with last year’s high-end SoCs as the Snapdragon 845. Therefore, it is not the latest in technology but it is more than enough for an incredible performance.

Meanwhile, the Redmi Note 7 Pro incorporates a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor also octa-core, which although it only has a maximum clock speed of 2.0GHz, is considered an excellent chipset “gaming” for the mid-range market. Making it a fierce competition to the Kirin 970 of the Nova 4 because both come with Adreno 612 GPU. Finally, the Redmi Note 7 is a bit behind, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 octa-core processor and its Adreno 512 GPU. Although we can not deny that it also offers performance that standing up.

The RAM of the Nova 4 (8GB RAM) is double that found in the Redmi Note 7 Pro (4GB RAM). So it is expected that it offers a better performance without any delay. For now, t5.he internal storage capacity is also twice as high as in the Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro, so we will have more space to store data without the need to expand memory. This last one can be decisive or not, because the terminals of Xiaomi allow the expansion until 256GB by card SD/TF, feature that the Nova 4 does not possess.

Operating System

All three devices come from the factory with Android 9.0 Pie, the latest operating system. However, being two of them from Xiaomi, its user interface is none other than MIUI in its version 10. For its part, the Nova 4 is part of the Huawei smartphones catalog so it offers us the EMUI version 9.0.1 customization layer.

Connectivity

The connectivity does not change much in the three terminals. We are in a time where being connected is very important, that is why manufacturers seek to offer the best even in low or mid-range devices. The only thing we can mention is that both the Redmi Note 7 and the Note 7 Pro come with Bluetooth version 5.0, while the Nova 4 still remains with the Bluetooth 4.2 LEL. Above this, all have the following connectivity features:

  • Wi-Fi 802.11, a/ac/b/g/n/n 5GHz;
  • Audio Jack 3.5 mm;
  • USB Type-C;
  • A-GPS, Beidou, GLONASS, GPS;
  • Wi-Fi Direct, Mobile Hotspot.

Camera

The big difference between Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro is in the main camera. First, we have the Note 7 that comes with dual sensors, one of 12.0MP, accompanied by a secondary one of 2.0MP. While the Note 7 Pro comes equipped with a primary 48.0MP sensor along with a secondary 5.0MP sensor.

Although the Redmi Note 7 can take excellent pictures using AI technology, we can not deny that the Redmi Note 7 Pro offers better shots in any condition, either in broad daylight or in low light. Only this last terminal can compete with the triple camera of the Huawei Nova 4, which also incorporates a primary sensor of 48.0MP with an aperture of f/1.8 but this is accompanied by two more sensors: 16.0 MP (f/2.2) + 2.0MP ( f/2.4).

The front camera of the Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro is a unique 13.0MP sensor in each. While the Nova 4 offers a camera with a sensor of an incredible 25.0MP. Perfect to take the best selfies. The three smartphones have aperture f/2.0.

Battery

The Redmi terminals offer the user a battery capacity of 4000mAh that will also benefit from the Quick Charge version 4.0 technology. This is a slight advantage over Huawei Nova 4 because, in terms of capacity, we only have 3750mAh available, although it is also compatible with the fast charging technology of 9V/2A 18W.

Price Comparison

The cost is what most makes us wonder: is it worth paying extra for a terminal that offers almost the same features? It all depends on the user’s criteria but nobody can deny that for their specifications the price of the Redmi Note 7 ($250-$300) and the Remi Note 7 Pro ($350-$400) is incredible. While Huawei Nova 4 is quite more expensive than we expected ($500-$600).

Our Verdict

Specs Winner: Huawei Nova 4

Price-quality Winner: Redmi Note 7 Pro

The Huawei Nova 4 exceeds expectations and takes a little beyond everything that surprised us in the Redmi Note 7 and the Redmi Note 7 Pro. While it is true that its battery could be of big capacity, this is a sacrifice that is made with the aim of not being large or heavy. Huawei has accustomed us to terminals with great cameras and the Nova 4 is not far behind. With its triple camera, it offers better image quality and more detail than Redmi devices, because the two sensors that accompany the 48.0MP main sensor are designed to improve shots even in low light conditions.

But taking into account that its price is higher, all the users prefer the Redmi Note 7 Pro. It has been valued at less than half the cost of the Nova 4. You do not get big differences but you can save a lot of your money. So the decision is totally up to you!
