Design & Appearance

Starting the OPPO Reno Preview, surprisingly, the standard version and the 10X zoom version has the same built quality. OPPO Reno forges from Aluminium Alloy with the 3D glass coating. However, there’s a difference between the size of these two variants. Considering the dimensions,  the OPPO Reno Standard Version appears to be slightly smaller than the OPPO Reno 10X Zoom with a difference of 2.9mm in length and 5.4mm in width. The thickness is almost the same with a slight difference of 0.3mm. Here are the prototypes:

OPPO Reno is available in four colors: Extreme Night Black, Mist Pink, Nebula Purple, and Fog Sea Green. Meanwhile, the 10X zoom version has only two colors: Extreme Night Black and Fog Sea Green. It’s a gradient color design which is trending a lot and has a nice visual experience with multi-color shades reflecting into the eye.

It’s good to see that the OPPO Reno eliminates the top-notch water drop trend and provides a true full-screen experience to the users with 93.1% screen-to-body ratio.  Even the chin is almost eliminated as well.

Since there’s no space on the top, for selfies, we have the same side-swing selfie camera module that opens out in just 0.8 seconds and has been tested 200,000 times.

In terms of ports and connectivity, the Standard version has the tradition 3.5mm audio jack, meanwhile, 10X zoom version removes the audio jack. However, the OPPO Reno 10X zoom features the copper tube liquid cooling system, whereas, there’s no cooling system in the standard version.

OPPO Reno omits camera bumps. Furthermore, there’s also an O-Dot ceramic point at the back of the phones to slight left the camera when placed on a flat surface. This helps to protect the lens to some extent. Moreover, the Oppo phones have an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor.

OPPO Reno has a slightly curved back from both sides for a nice grip. The camera placement is vertical at the top center. For the standard version we have dual cameras with some spacing, meanwhile, for 10X Zoom version we have triple rear cameras. One can clearly see the laser added autofocus at the right side of the camera, as well as the dual-tone, LED flash under the camera. The new OPPO Reno logo is also noticeable at the bottom rear along with a stylish strip.

Screen & Display

OPPO Reno standard version features a 6.4-inch AMOLED Full-HD+ display. The display has a curvy look thanks to the 2.5D glass arc. In case of Reno 10X Zoom, the screen is 6.6-inch with the same display and resolution. The display panel is TUV Rheinland certified and supports DCI-P3 color gamut.

Indeed, there’s a slight difference of the pixel density as due to a smaller display, OPPO Reno has a pixel density of 403 ppi, meanwhile, for Reno 10X Zoom it’s 388 ppi. The in-screen fingerprint reader adds a lot of value to OPPO Reno’s screen. The flagship sport a panoramic AMOLED display along with sixth-generation Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

Hardware & Performance

In terms of hardware and performance, we again have the variation in this OPPO Reno Preview. The standard version runs on an upper-mid end Snapdragon 710. However, the 10X Zoom version runs on the most powerful Android SoC which is Snapdragon 855. The performance difference is almost twice.

  • AnTuTu Score (SD 855): 350,000+ Points
  • AnTuTu Score (SD 710): 200,000+ points

In terms of configuration, both phones have 6/8GB RAM and 128GB/256GB ROM. OPPO Reno 10X Zoom has a UFS 2.1 type storage. Both models support VOOC 3.0 fast charge but difference battery capacity. The standard version features a 3765mAh battery, meanwhile, OPPO 10X Zoom version has a massive 4065mAh battery. With the 7nm process, the 10X zoom version clearly has more battery life.

Camera & Samples

Coming to the greatest highlight of the OPPO Reno series is the camera. To be specific, it’s the OPPO Reno 10X Zoom Camera. Sadly, the standard version has a dual camera setup with 48MP ultra-clear primary camera + 5MP depth secondary camera. Meanwhile, the 10X zoom version has a triple camera setup, with 48MP ultra-clear primary camera, 12MP telephoto camera, and an 8MP wide-angle 120 degrees camera.

OPPO Reno Preview - Camera

The main camera is a Sony IMX586 CMOS, 48 MP, 1 /2.0-inch sensor, F1.7 large aperture, support for laser focus, with a closed-loop focus motor.

The triple camera lens can achieve a 16-160mm “full focal length” to achieve a 10x zoom. Furthermore, the dualOIS and triple focus for main and telephoto lenses shoot stable video without a need for a tripod stand.

At the same time, there is a super clear night scene 2.0 mode. The 48 MP main camera with composite multi-frame noise reduction, HDR technology, can achieve a series of optimizations such as noise reduction, hand-held anti-shake, and improved dynamic range. Meanwhile, the AI night scene portrait can also make skin tone more natural.

The new flagship has also redesigned five classic portrait styles, featuring a new beauty algorithm, portrait blur, professional color grading, and added HSL face skin color reduction technology to record more dimensional skin color information and automatically correcting skin tone. The 16MP front selfie camera also supports the new portrait style and has a soft light.

Reno series also uses the threemicrophone setup to enable features such as audio zoom recording and 3D surround audio capturing.

The super clear night scene 2.0 mode, redesigned portrait mode, five portrait styles are available in the standard version as well. However, the 10X zoom, 120 degrees wide-angle mode are limited to the 10x Zoom version.

OS & Features

Both, the OPPO Reno Standard version and 10X Zoom version run on ColorOS 6.0 based on Android 9.0 (Pie). The new OS from OPPO has five cool features such as Frame Boost, Touch Boost, Assistant Breno and so on.

Reno series also introduces the GameBoost 2.0 game acceleration engine optimizing the games to the next level.

OPPO Reno series incorporates tons of features set for a premium flagship. To be honest, we haven’t seen such numerous features in a flagship for a while. Some of these features have been told earlier such as the Ultrasonic In-screen Fingerprint Reader, Camera features (night mode 2.0, 10X, ultra wide-angle mode, five redesigned portrait modes, dual OIS), OS features (Breeno Assistant, GameBoost 2.0, Frame Boost, Touch Boost). Other features include the built-in NFC combined with OPPO Wallet, HiRes, and Dolby Atmos support.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • New innovative rear camera layout + side-swing selfie camera
  • Incredible Camera Performance
  • Tons of New Features
  • Two variants, three configuration variants in each, four color options
  • Snapdraong 855
  • Long Battery Life

Cons

  • No 3.5mm audio jack in 10x Zoom version
  • Dual camera setup in Standard version
  • No waterproof chassis

The Verdict

This time around, OPPO provides a wide choice of variants in the Reno series with wide color options. However, the difference in the Standard and 10X zoom version appears to be too confusing for an ordinary user. In clear words, we have 2 variants, inside 2 variants we have 3 more variants each, and with a total of six variants, each variant has a limited color option.

We might have six variants here, three for each version, but the specific color availability for each variant limits the choice

OPPO sacrifices some features in both variants. The standard version has a relatively low price, however, limits itself to dual camera setup with no wide-angle (still incredible performance, dual OIS, same modes), no cooling system, and use of a mid-end SD 710.

Meanwhile, the 10X zoom version might have the triple camera configuration with 10x zoom, SD 855, cooling system, and some features which the standard version doesn’t have, however, it still doesn’t have the basic 3.5mm audio jack, two color options only, and a slightly expensive price tag. Ultimately, it creates confusion for the user in selecting a specific variant.

Both versions of the Reno series limits themselves with something either too common or too rare

If you can afford the price and sacrifice the audio jack, the 10X Zoom version is, no doubt, the best option with everything the standard one has along with cool exclusive features like the 10x zoom, and the best Android SoC ‘SD 855’.
