Let’s start this Samsung Exynos 7904 vs Exynos 7870 vs Exynos 7885 Comparison with an overview of the CPU of the 3 participants. Samsung has maintained a clear position in the manufacture of these processors, so the 3 have a 14nm lithography.

Samsung Exynos 7904 vs Exynos 7870 vs Exynos 7885 - Exynos 7870 Performance

The Exynos 7904 has an architecture consisting of 2 Cortex A73 high-performance cores at 1.8GHz and 6 Cortex A53 at 1.6GHz. This has support for a Cat. 12 LTE modem.

As for the Exynos 7870, it consists of 8 cores, but all are Cortex A53 at 1.6GHz. In addition, the modem implemented is a Cat.6 LTE with 300MB of download and 50MB of upload.

However, the other candidate, the Exynos 7885, has a slightly more powerful architecture in speed than the new 7904, since it has 2 Cortex A73 with speeds of 2.2GHz and 6 Cortex A53 at 1.6GHz; In addition, it uses an LTE Cat.12 modem for download and Cat. 13 for upload. This configuration tells us that the 7885 is the virtual winner of the contest for very little, but the new 7904 processor has several tricks to highlight.

The Exynos 7885 has a better CPU, but just for a little bit

The Exynos 7870 uses a Mali-T830 MP1 GPU. It uses a single cluster and supports OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 1.2 and DirectX 11 (FL 9_3). This GPU is not as powerful as the previous one, but it is slightly compensated by the CPU.

Samsung Exynos 7904 vs Exynos 7870 vs Exynos 7885 – Other Specs Comparison

Finally, we will see the features that can make unique to each of the participants in this Samsung Exynos 7904 vs Exynos 7870 vs Exynos 7885 Comparison. We started with the recently announced Exynos 7904. This SoC has the task of bringing the characteristics of the current high-end to the mid-range devices, such as the use of up to 3 cameras in the back. This SoC can support up to 32MP per camera, play HD videos at 120fps and Full HD at 30fps. It is compatible with LPDDR4x RAM and eMMC5.1 storage.

The Exynos 7885 improves the bet slightly, thanks to its compatibility with individual sensors up to 21.7MP or failing that, to dual 16 + 16MP configurations. In addition, the RAM memory can be of LPPDR4x, being as fast as that of the new 7904. This last SoC maintains a very small gap with respect to its new brother, being a worthy participant.

Except for the 7870, candidates defend themselves well in the RAM section.

Winner: Exynos 7904

Our Verdict

Although the Exynos 7904 is the winner, the margin of difference is very little compared to the other 2 competitors. It does not reach the CPU level of the 7885 for very little, but the 7904 stands out for its improved capacity for photographic sensors. However, we do not consider it a difference of power that justifies a big change, and unless we really want a mobile with a triple camera, both the Exynos 7870 and the 7885 are SoCs of very high quality.
