Xiaomi Adds MIUI Anti-Rollback Protection To Smartphones & More

It was recently announced that Xiaomi, who in addition to being famous for their different Smartphones also have their own custom Android layer (MIUI), would have finally decided to apply the MIUI Anti-Rollback Protection for several of their mobile devices, among which include the Xiaomi Mi 6X, the Redmi 6 Pro and the Redmi Note 5. While this feature may not bother most users, the truth is that this means that the possibility of returning to an earlier version of MIUI if we have the latest update has been blocked.

MIUI Anti-Rollback Protection and regional blocking

The MIUI Anti-Rollback Protection has not been the only novelty applied to the software. It has also been known thanks to a publication made on September 12 by an administrator of the MIUI forum that the use of regional versions other than the terminal has also been blocked. We will remember that until recently, some users in an effort to get a preview of what the new version of MIUI had before it arrived on their land, proceeded to install a version corresponding to another region (being these or China or the International version).

However, the most recent announcement indicates that if the Smartphone is the Chinese version, it cannot run MIUI international ROM. This is the same in the opposite direction, so the international versions of the terminals will not be able to use the Chinese ROM.

The XDA guys did a test of this to know what would be the effects of skipping this warning, and that is, trying to install a version not compatible with the Smartphone region, it would stay in the Recovery interface, simply by showing the message “this version of MIUI cannot be installed on this device“.

Xiaomi has not specified the cause of why this happens, however, XiaoMiTool developer franztesca discovered that this blockage occurs because of a regional comparison code that has been added to the terminals.

The following terminals are confirmed to implement this new system, in addition to the region-lock:

  • Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth Edition
  • Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro
  • Xiaomi Mi Max 3

If by any chance of fate we are part of the users who block our terminal by ignoring the existence of the MIUI Anti-Rollback protection, do not despair. We will simply have to enter the EDL (Emergency Download) mode. However, this function is limited to a few terminals.
