Drop Protection Case iPhone Guide

Best Drop Protection Case Guide For iPhone + Recommendation

Your Buying Guide For iPhone Cases

There’s always a hot debate when it comes to selecting the best case for your iPhone. I have seen countless Reddit posts with people fighting over plastic vs metal, TPE vs TPU, and looks over thickness. There are even more debates when it comes to drop protection. To clear the confusion once and for all, I have created this article that will explain to you what you should be looking for in an iPhone case when it comes to drop protection.

I recommend a branded case from CASEKOO. I have explained at the end of the guide, why this brand is suitable for iPhone including the new iPhone 16 series instead of the others on the market.

  1. CASEKOO Magicstand 2024 Polished Frame Case (Aluminum alloy version) for iPhone 12 to iPhone 16 Pro Max
  2. CASEKOO Magicstand 2024 Titanium 360° Rotatable Magnetic Stand (Titanium Stand version) for iPhone 15 Pro/Max and iPhone 16 Pro/Max
  3. CASEKOO Pearl Shell Case for iPhone 14 Pro/Max and iPhone 15 Pro/Max
  4. CASEKOO Slim Translucent Matte Case for iPhone 12 to iPhone 16 Pro Max

How I Select The Features For The Best Drop Protection Case

1. Rigged Yet Flexible

The case should be thick and perfectly balanced between strength (hardness) and flexibility. When a phone drops, the vibration from the impact causes the damage. Such a case with shock absorption properties will absorb the vibrations before it reaches the main body. It should not be so hard that it just shatters or transfers the shock to the main body damaging and too hard to press the buttons as well. Vice versa, it should not be too soft and flexible that it doesn’t even hold to the force.

2. The Best Material For Drop Protection

Most cases use plastic polymers as well as polycarbonate and silicone. A few use metal and carbon for extreme protection. Every material has its pros and cons. Here are the materials used in iPhone cases along with their advantages and disadvantages:

MaterialProsCons
TPECheaper than TPU
Doesn’t absorb moisture
Better cold tolerance than rubber
Rubbery feeling
Slightly prone to shrinkage
Not as durable as TPU
TPUSmooth feeling
The best durability in cold
More durable than TPE ( and rubber
Perfect balance between the flexibility of rubber and the strength of plastic
No shrinkage
Good grip when wet
Best price-to-performance ratio
Absorbs moisture (hygroscopic)
Might get yellowish over time (a few manufacturers do some coating to protect from oxidization)
RubberThe best shock resistance and elasticity
Cheapest cases
Better high-temperature resistance than TPE and TPU
The best grip when wet
Poor performance in cold
Can not be recycled
Strong smell
Poor heat dissipation
Catches dirt
Hard to clean

SiliconSofter than rubber
Non-toxic and hypoallergenic
Better grip than TPE and TPU when wet
Better temperature resistance than rubber
The thinnest covers and best aesthetics
Can be used as everyday cases but do not offer protection from drops

The worst structural integratory
PolycarbonateBetter structural integratory (strength) than all others except metal and carbon fiber

The case grip is not good when wet
Tight casing / would leave marks on the body (not for frequent removal of the case)
Carbon FiberSuper lightweight and thin
Better structural integratory than all materials except metal
The best strength over weight and thickness ratio (ideal for slim cases with extra protection)
Slightly more flexible than metal
Can block signals
No MagSafe (if the area is not removed)
Shatters if exceeds the maximum limit
Highly expensive
Aramid FiberSimilar to carbon fiber
Lightweight
Unpenetrable (application in phone case unknown)
Better impact resistance than carbon fiber
Most expensive
Moisture absorption
Degrades under UV
MetalThe best premium feeling
The best structural integratory (strength) and durability
The most impact-resistant
Expensive
Ruggedness
The worst flexibility
Might leave marks on the case
  • Flexibility: Silicone > Rubber > TPU > TPE > Polycarbonate > Aramid Fiber > Carbon Fiber > Metal
  • Durability: Metal > Carbon Fiber > Aramid Fiber > Polycarbonate > TPU > TPE > Rubber = Silicone
  • Grip: Rubber > Silicone > TPU > TPE > Polycarbonate > Aramid Fiber > Carbon Fiber > Metal
  • Impact Resistance: Metal > Aramid Fiber > Carbon Fiber > Polycarbonate > TPU > Rubber = Silicone

Tip: Look for cases that have two materials combined like a soft TPU on the corners and borders (for easy removal of the case and no marks) and a metal/carbon plate at the back for extra protection (area left for Magsafe to work). Also, TPU is the perfect balance between all the materials and is suitable for the new iPhone 16 series.

3. Extra Protection From the Edges

A good iPhone case will have extra protection on the edges. Similar to what rugged cases have. Since corners are the most susceptible to taking the most damage, there should be extra padding. Nowadays, the case manufacturers also increase the thickness of the case around the borders so that, unlike that rugged design corner padding, it looks uniform and elegant.

4. Raised Casing Around the Screen

To prevent a damaged display when falling face first, a drop protection case should have a bump/raised surface around the display so that it hits the surface first before the display.

5. Back and camera protection

Good cases provide complete 360-degree protection. So not only do they save your phone from the front, but they even have protection for the cameras and back. So how to know if the back and camera are protected? Usually, cases would cover the back but might not protect the camera especially if they are protruding outside the chassis. To check for camera protection in cases, check if the case has raised borders around the camera that protrude higher than the camera outsole.

My Recommendation

CASEKOO Military Grade Titanium/Aluminium Magic Stand Case 2024 – Best Sutaible Case iPhone 16

Casekoo

Finding the recommended drop protection case for iPhone is quite challenging when there are so many cases around. The table above shows the comparison of the most popular cases for the iPhone 13 series and above.

I recommend the CASEKOO Military Grade Titanium Cases for iPhone 13 and above. My reason for selecting it is as follows:

  • Multiple materials used for the best outcome: TPU (for transparency, anti-yellowing coating, and borders) + Polycarbonate (back with air cushioning)+ Aluminum alloy kickstand (magicstand) on the back.
  • Slight groove on the border for better grip
  • 2.5mm camera border raise and 1.5mm screen border raise
  • 16FT Military-grade protection (drop tested 5000+ times)
  • Embedded 48-piece N52 magnets ring structure which has 2x stronger attachment than the official MagSafe case by Apple
  • The transparent case version has a super high gloss to make the iPhone color shine more

Moreover, it is rated 4.5/5 on every case CASEKOO has on Amazon

Here are the links to their phone cases with magic stands:

  1. CASEKOO Magicstand 2024 Polished Frame Case (Aluminum alloy version) for iPhone 12 to iPhone 16 Pro Max
  2. CASEKOO Magicstand 2024 Titanium 360° Rotatable Magnetic Stand (Titanium Stand version) for iPhone 15 Pro/Max and iPhone 16 Pro/Max
  3. CASEKOO Pearl Shell Case for iPhone 14 Pro/Max and iPhone 15 Pro/Max
  4. CASEKOO Slim Translucent Matte Case for iPhone 12 to iPhone 16 Pro Max

In the end, selecting an iPhone case depends on what your daily routine is. For a student, a TPU case would be fine. Meanwhile, a construction worker would need something with extra protection, especially around the corners.
