Sony Has Shipped Over 20 Billion Image Sensors For Smartphones

News Highlights

  • From 2010 to 2024, Sony has shipped 20 billion Image Sensors
  • For increasing demand, Sony is making another factory
  • It took only 5 years for Sony to reach from 10 billion to 20 billion units
  • Sony covers the majority of the image sensor market

Yoshihiro Yamaguchi, president of Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd., said in an interview that Sony has shipped more than 20 billion image sensors to date. Sony is currently building a new factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, and the company’s semiconductor business is still developing rapidly.

It is understood that from 2010 to 2019, Sony image sensors achieved a shipment target of 10 billion units. Since then, this number has grown exponentially. It took only five years for Sony to reach from 10 billion to 20 billion units. The main reason for the growth is the significant increase in the number of cameras installed on each smartphone.

According to data, since the arrival of the first mobile phone with a camera which was Sharp J-SH04, in 2000, the mobile phone industry has developed for more than 20 years, and imaging technology has made a qualitative leap. Anti-shake, low-light HD, and HDR have become standard features of mobile phones. The rich camera functions require the addition of software algorithms on the one hand and the coordinated cooperation of multiple cameras on the other.

Therefore, we often see triple and quad cameras on high-end flagships. The hot sales of these flagship models have also driven the development of the image sensor market, and Sony Semiconductor has become one of the main beneficiaries.

According to the latest research from TechInsights Sensor Semiconductor Channel, the global smartphone image sensor (CIS) market size will grow slightly in 2023, with total revenue exceeding US$14 billion.
