In short, the most important feature in any smartphone or smart device, in general, is the processor that is inside its body, since it is what makes them work the way they work and with the speed and efficiency with which they do it. Today we are going to make a comparison between one of the newest MediaTek processors, the Dimensity 700, and the Snapdragon 720G, so welcome to this MediaTek Dimensity 700 vs Snapdragon 720G comparison.
Regarding release dates, it is obvious that Dimensity 700 has a great advantage over the Snapdragon 720G. This processor was shown to the world a very very short time ago, since it was just a couple of days ago, on November 10, 2020. Having said that, and although the Snapdragon 720G was not presented long ago, it does have time hanging around the market, since it was presented at the beginning of the year, on January 20, 2020.
Before we start talking about these two processors, it should be noted that they are very similar. Now having that cleared up, let’s get started talking about its internal specs. Regarding its process, the SoC made by MediaTek works along with a 7nm LPP FinFET process made by TSMC, while the SoC made by Qualcomm has an 8nm LPP process made by Samsung. It is worth remembering that, the lower the number, the better the processor, and with more power will work.
Also, and according to the officials, the 7nm process is 28% more efficient than the 8nm process, so the MediaTek Dimensity 700 gets to be the winner in this category.
Winner: MediaTek Dimensity 700
Getting to talk about the CPU inside these processors, both have a dual-cluster, octa-core design CPU, which is distributed as follows (2 + 6) in the MediaTek Dimensity 700:
On the other hand, and although it was mentioned that the Snapdragon 720G has the same design, it is distributed in a slightly different way, and it is as follows:
Now, having seen the CPUs that these two processors bring, comes the question of which SoC works with greater power. When looking at the individual cores, it can be seen that the two high-performance cores of the Snapdragon 720G work with a slightly higher speed, however, when seeing the whole picture, and with its 8 cores running at the same time, the Dimensity 700 it has a bit more power, making it the winner in this category, plus the 7nm process it has gives it extra power.
Winner: MediaTek Dimensity 700
Turning to talk about the GPUs that are inside these two powerful processors, the Dimensity 700 features a 2 core Arm Mali-G57 MC2 as the GPU running with a frequency of @950MHz. On the other hand, in terms of GPU performance, the Snapdragon 720G comes with the Adreno 618 GPU. The frequency is unknown but we expect it to be around @600MHz to @720MHz.
Not only is there no knowledge about the frequency with which the GPU of the SoC made by Qualcomm works, but also, the different Mali GPU tends to work with greater efficiency and greater power than the Adreno, and that is why the MediaTek Dimensity 700 takes the winning spot.
Related to Artificial Intelligence, Dimensity 700 doesn’t have the iconic APU 3.0 as found in Dimensity 1000 series. Instead, in the 700 version, we see an AI accelerator that provides AI capabilities but at a very basic level. With that being said, the Snapdragon 720G has an AI score of 21.3 on the AI benchmark listing with the dedicated Hexagon 692 DSP.
Winner: Tie (MediaTek Dimensity 700 and Snapdragon 720G)
In relation to the scores obtained by these two processors in the Benchmarks, and since the Dimensity 700 is a degraded version of the 720, the MediaTek Dimensity 700 5G AnTuTu (v8) benchmark score is expected to be around 250,000 to 280,000 points. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 720G scored a total of 276,500 points.
Winner: Snapdragon 720G
As for connectivity, MediaTek Dimensity 700 like the rest of Dimensity SoC supports 5G networking with SA & NSA modes. The maximum download speed is 2.77 Gbps while the upload speed is 1.2 Gbps. Also, features such as 5G Carrier Aggregation (2CC 5G-CA) and 5G dual SIM dual standby (DSDS) are present along with MediaTek 5G UltraSave. This in fact is the most power-efficient 5G SoC.
On the other hand, the Snapdragon 720G has an X15 LTE modem (download: Cat 15, up to 800 Mbit/s; upload: Cat 13, up to 150 Mbit/s). Apart from this, the other connectivity features are insane for a mid-end SoC. These include the first mid-end SoC to introduce the WiFi 6 standard. Other include Bluetooth 5.1, Dual-frequency GNSS, NavIC, and FM radio. With that being said, this processor does not support 5G.
Regarding its cameras, the MediaTek Dimensity 700 supports single camera support up to 64 megapixels and dual-camera support up to 16 megapixels + 16 megapixels. Apart from the sensor, the SoC provides Night Shot Enhancements for better low light results along with basic AI filters including AI-Bokeh, AI-color, and AI-beauty.
That being said, the Snapdragon 720G has the legendary Qualcomm Spectra 350L image signal processor, Dual 14-bit ISPs. It has single camera support of a freaking 192 MP and 16MP+16 MP Dual camera support at 30fps with MFNR/ZSL. AI camera filters are present in this SoC.
Winner: MediaTek Snapdragon 720G
About their memory, the MediaTek processor supports LPDDR4x 12GB memory with a maximum frequency of 2133MHz and UFS 2.2 storage type. However, the Snapdragon 720G’s max RAM capacity is slightly less which is 8GB, and the clock speed supported is 2300MHz.
Finally, to see what is the best option among these processors at the budget level, we have to know the price of the phones they are on. The Snapdragon 720G is available in various phone pricing ranging from 180 USD to 300 USD, being the Redmi Note 9S one of the cheapest with a price of 186 USD. On the other hand, and knowing that the Dimensity 700 is just a decreased version of the Dimensity 720, that is inside of phones with prices around the 273 USD, a Dimensity 700 5G phone will range from as low as 180 USD to as high as 250 USD.
Winner: Tie (depending on the price of the phones with Dimensity 700)
