Dimensity 9200 – Process

Based on TSMC’s second-generation 4nm process, the number of transistors reaches 17 billion. According to the data, TSMC’s current 4nm process has three versions, namely N4, N4P, and N4X. According to data released by TSMC, the N4P process can improve performance by 11% or increase energy efficiency by 22% and transistor density by 6% compared with the original N5 process, while the energy efficiency of N4 is increased by about 6.6%.

The latest N4X, on the other hand, offers a performance improvement of approximately 15% over N5. Compared to N4P, the performance is improved by about 4% at 1.2V, while N4X will enter trial production in the first half of 2023. From the introduction, the Dimensity 9200 should use the N4P process, and the energy efficiency may be improved by about 6.6% compared to the N4.

Thanks to TSMC’s second-generation 4nm process, the Dimensity 9200 has a transistor count of 17 billion. As a comparison, the previous generation Dimensity 9000 has 15.3 billion transistors and Apple’s latest A16 processor has 16 billion transistors.

Dimensity 9200 – CPU

The Dimensity 9200 released by MediaTek can be said to be the world’s first chip that fully adopts the second-generation CPU core based on the 64-bit Armv9 architecture. The performance core fully supports 64-bit applications, A715 large core.

The Dimensity 9200 continues the three-cluster architecture of the Dimensity flagship series, including one Cortex-X3 super core with a main frequency of up to 3.05GHz, three Cortex-A715 large cores with a main frequency of 2.85GHz, and four main Cortex-A510 small core frequency 1.8GHz.

MediaTek Dimensity 9200 CPU

Thanks to the new Armv9 second-generation CPU core architecture and TSMC’s second-generation 4nm process technology, the Dimensity 9200 has a 12% increase in single-core and multi-core performance compared to the Dimensity 9000. and 10%. In addition, with the efficient multi-threaded 64-bit architecture, the Dimensity 9200 can accomplish the same thing with higher efficiency.

At the same time, the Dimensity 9200 is also outstanding in terms of low power consumption and high energy efficiency. Compared with the Dimensity 9000, the peak performance power consumption of the CPU is greatly reduced by 25%.

To sum up, compared to the Dimensity 9000, the 10-12% improvement in overall CPU performance is not that big, but this is achieved on the premise of a 25% reduction in power consumption. After all, Dimensity 9200 is a flagship chip for smartphones. Performance is important, but power consumption and heat generation are equally important. This is also the key for MediaTek to set the theme of the Dimensity 9200 conference as “Cool Power – Full Speed”.

According to official data, thanks to Imagiq 890, the night shooting capability of Dimensity 9200 has increased by 30% in brightness and 20% in detail compared with the flagship phone in 2021.

The Imagiq 890 is also said to combine with the APU’s ability to support advanced intelligent image semantics, which uses artificial intelligence to analyze environmental colors, object construction and movement, layered labeling, and color tuning, which in turn improves overall image quality. In addition, with fast and accurate AI image capture and noise reduction technology, the Imagiq 9200 also supports AI dual-track capture function and movie mode, making every shot a professional blockbuster and clear with everyday shots.

Dimensity 9200 – Connectivity

At the Dimensity 9200 conference, MediaTek did not introduce the improvement of its 5G baseband performance. However, MediaTek utilizes the excellent AI capabilities of the Dimensity 9200 to further optimize the 5G intelligent travel mode in high-speed rail, basement, subway, airport, and other scenarios, and realize the intelligent networking function of fast network search, fast return to the network, and fast network speed.

Dimensity 9200 follows MediaTek’s consistent advantages in dual-card technology and launches “5G new dual-pass” technology, that is, on the basis of no new hardware, through software architecture improvement, the radio frequency resources are dynamically divided and simulated. Two sets of radio frequency systems are installed, allowing card 1 and card 2 to be used at the same time.

MediaTek Dimensity 9200 connectivity

Simply put, MediaTek’s Dimensity 9200 is able to achieve the new dual-pass 5G with only one set of baseband and radio frequency hardware, relying on the “dynamic dual-lane” software architecture.

5G new dual-pass has the advantages of a flexible architecture and wider coverage, supporting more than 100 frequency band combinations, and covering more network standards, including SA (SA SA and SA LTE), NSA (NSA LTE), LTE (LTE) LTE), etc.

In terms of network performance, the new dual-pass technology enables one card to talk and the other card to enjoy low latency and high-speed network connectivity. Under the same frequency band of two cards, the full-time dual-pass is more than 30% faster than the real-time dual-pass network speed.

The Dimensity 9200 also supports the latest generation of MediaTek 5G UltraSave 3.0 power-saving technology, which enables further energy efficiency optimization in heavy load scenarios, light load scenarios, and standby mode compared to the flagship processor’s 5G baseband in 2021.

Significantly improved wireless communication capabilities: first WIFI 7, support for global satellite positioning.

In addition to cellular mobile networks, Wi-Fi networks are the most common way of networking for smartphone users. The latest Wi-Fi 7 technology, compared to Wi-Fi 6, brings huge performance improvement by introducing 320MHz bandwidth, 4096-QAM, Multi-RU, multi-link operation, enhanced MU-MIMO, multi-AP collaboration, and other technologies, making Wi-Fi 7 compared to Wi-Fi 6 can provide about 2.7 times higher data transmission rate, 3 times higher network efficiency and 20% reduction in latency.

MediaTek’s Dimensity 9200 will be the first to support the upcoming Wi-Fi 7 wireless connection with a theoretical peak network transmission rate of 6.5Gbps.

while continuing to support Bluetooth 5.3, Dimensity 9200 also supports new Bluetooth audio LE Audio and AURACAST broadcast audio. LE Audio is a next-generation Bluetooth Low Energy audio standard that delivers extremely high-quality audio at low bit rates.

In addition, in terms of satellite positioning capabilities, the Dimensity 9200 brings further enhancements to the previous generation Dimensity 9000. In addition to the original support for GPS (L1, L5), Galileo (E1, E5a), GLONASS (L1), NavIC (L5), QZSS (L1, L6), China Compass (B2b, B11, B1C, B2a) and Europe Galileo (E5b), the 9200 also adds support for China Compass (B2b, B11, B1C, B2a) and Europe Galileo (E5b).

Dimensity 9200 – Multimedia

In terms of multimedia performance, the MediaTek Dimensity series has also been remarkable in recent years. For example, the previous generation Dimensity 9000 not only supports 8K video encoding but is also the world’s first mobile phone chip that supports 8K AV1 video playback. In terms of display, it supports a 144Hz refresh rate at WQHD+ resolution or 180Hz refresh rate at FHD resolution, as well as HDR10 Adaptive.

The new Dimensity 9200 continues the features of its predecessor in terms of codec capability, while in terms of display technology, it is equipped with MediaTek MiraVision 890 mobile display technology, which supports full-scene high-quality HDR displays and also adapts to a wide range of terminal screen designs, including high-performance gaming displays, high-resolution displays, and foldable displays, supporting Full HD resolution 240Hz refresh rate, WQHD resolution 144Hz refresh rate and 5K (2.5K×2) resolution 60Hz refresh rate, as well as adaptive refresh rate technology for a smoother display.
