A large number of users have reported receiving the grayscale push of the stable version of MIUI 14 on their models, including the Mi 12 series, Mi 12S series, and Redmi K50 series. This update has reportedly improved the smoothness of the user experience. Many users who have already updated have noted that the fluency is significantly better compared to the previous version. One of the most noticeable improvements is the smoothness of the system, with apps like WeChat opening quickly and the issue of background app killing being resolved.

This improvement can be attributed to the contributions of the razor Project and the Photon Engine. The razor Project is designed to streamline the system by allowing for the deletion of all third-party pre-installed software, as well as some system apps that come with Xiaomi devices. Only eight essential apps phone, SMS, contacts, file management, system settings, app store, browser, and camera – cannot be deleted, resulting in a reduction of system occupation.

The Photon Engine operates on the Android kernel and allows third-party app developers to access its capabilities. This results in a significant improvement in system fluency in high-load scenarios, with smooth and seamless information flow. The fluency of third-party apps is increased by 88% while also saving 16% in power consumption. The Photon Engine has been a source of discussion among users, as it was not initially included with the upgrade to MIUI 14 on all models. In response, Xiaomi officials issued a statement promising that all models upgraded to MIUI 14 would be able to experience the smoothness of the Photon Engine. However, due to the need for thorough coordination of software and hardware and the extensive engineering required for system architecture adjustments, the rollout of the Photon Engine is being done gradually, on a model-by-model basis.

In addition to these improvements, MIUI 14 has also addressed a small issue with the design logic of its large folder feature. Previously, the folder occupied the space of four icons but only allowed for the direct opening of three apps, with the remaining apps requiring an extra click to access. This feature received some criticism from users. In response, MIUI 14 has introduced a nine-grid version of the large folder, allowing for the direct opening of eight icons in the space previously occupied by four. It also includes smart display functionality, which learns from the user’s sorting habits and intelligently recommends frequently used apps for easy access. This should make the large folder more efficient and user-friendly.

Overall, the updates to MIUI 14 have been well-received by users, with the improvements to system fluency and app smoothness being particularly noteworthy. The addition of the Photon Engine and the modifications to the large folder feature has addressed some of the concerns and criticisms of previous versions. While the rollout of these updates is being done gradually, all models upgraded to MIUI 14 should eventually be able to experience the benefits of these improvements.
