Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen2 is Official | 32 Bit Support Gets Better

This morning, Qualcomm announced the next-generation flagship SoC Snapdragon 8 Gen2.

In terms of performance, the CPU is 35% better, the GPU is 25% better, and the AI performance is 4.35x better. It also brings support for cutting-edge technologies such as Wi-Fi 7, UFS 4.0, 2K 144Hz display, 8K 60P AV1 video decoding, Bluetooth LE, and more.

There are also many differences between the Snapdragon 8 Gen2, Snapdragon 8+ Snapdragon 8, and Snapdragon 888 in terms of paper specifications. If you are interested, you can refer to the chart.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen2 has more enhancements or energy efficiency improvements, support for 8K 60P AV1 decodings, support for LPDDR5X-4200 memory, and UFS 4.0 flash memory, which will also be the next wave of Xiaomi, OPPO, and other flagships.

Another point of concern is that Snapdragon 8 Gen2’s small core Cortex-A510 only supports 64-bit, which means that the first generation of A510 is used, not the v2 version.

Qualcomm has made some clarifications about Snapdragon 8 Gen2’s support for 64-bit and 32-bit.

According to ArcT, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Gen2’s three Cortex-A510-based energy-efficient cores as the second generation, or A510R1, adding support for 32-bit programs.

This means that although Snapdragon 8 Gen2 was released later and more advanced, the support for 32-bit will be even better than the previous generation Snapdragon 8 Gen1 and 8+ Gen1, which only had 32-bit support for the three mid-core A710s.

After the 32-bit application load is handed over to the smaller cores, the power consumption will theoretically be lower, perhaps a more efficient match.

It is reported that in the middle of this year ARM updated the CPU public version of the architecture, and Cortex-X3/A715 together with the debut of the second generation of A510 small core claimed to reduce the power consumption by 5%.

The most squishy component of these generations is always the QC5.0 fast charging of up to 100W, which Qualcomm may think is completely competitive with the Chinese manufacturers’ own solutions and they have simply stopped looking for further solutions.
