In short, the most important feature in any smartphone or smart device, in general, is the processor that is inside its body, since it is what makes them work the way they work and with the speed and efficiency with which they do it. Today we are going to make a comparison between two of the best processors that MediaTek has, and this is the strong and powerful war between MediaTek Dimensity 800 vs Helio G90T. In this article, we will show some of the characteristics that these two processors provide, and we will tell you which the best choice is.
About release dates, it is obvious that the Dimensity 800 has a great advantage. This processor was shown to the world a very short time ago, on January 7 of this year, thus surprising users. Having said that, and although the Helio G90T was not presented long ago, it does have time hanging around the market, since it was presented almost a year ago, on July 9, 2019.
First off let us start with the process technology which determines the power consumption and performance of the SoC. Keep in mind the lower the number the better is the performance as well as battery life efficiency. Well, we can clearly see that the Dimensity 800 owns the first place in this category due to 7nm its process, while the Helio G90T gets the second place due to its 12nm process. The smaller size in the nanometers makes it possible to build smaller chips but with greater power, and the new EUV technology helps it manage energy consumption much better.
It is time to start this great comparison of processors, and we will start talking about the CPUs that are inside. Starting with the Dimensity 800, it is the first SoC to feature the four core performance and core architectures in the core segment; This large processor works with four large ARM Cortex A76 cores with a clock speed of 2 GHz, along with four small ARM Cortex A55 cores with the same clock speeds, up to 2 GHz. MediaTek is working on the inclusion of more chips performance cores, and all due to having more performance cores improves the opening times of the applications and games, as well as improves the performance of multiple threads.
That being said, the Helio G90T comes with an updated Cortex A76 architecture. It has two ARM Cortex A76 high-performance cores running @2.05GHz and six ARM Cortex A55 power-efficient cores running at @2.0GHz.
Having seen the CPUs that these two processors bring, and while it can be said that this could be a tie, the very small advantage in the frequency of the low-power Cortex A55 cores in the Helio G90T gives this processor the first place in this category.
Turning to talk about the GPUs that are inside these two powerful processors, in terms of GPU performance, the Dimensity 800 uses the Mali-G57MC4, a four-core variant of the Mali-G57, which was announced in October. Its clock speed hasn’t been disclosed yet.
On the other hand, the Helio G90T uses a much powerful high-end GPU which is the 10 cores Mali-G76 3EEMC4 running at @800MHz. It’s the same GPU used in Huawei Kirin 980 SoC but with better speed. In comparison with its previous iteration, the Mali-G72 MP3 that offers twice the performance per cluster and according to ARM, this new version offers improvements in the machine learning efficiency and a bigger tile buffer for 16x anti-aliasing. Also, this processor comes with HyperEngine Game Technology incorporated.
The Dimensity 800 had a close call with the Helio G90T, however, and because we don’t have Dimensity’s clock speed and official GPU benchmark, we might consider this section a tie for now. We do believe that Helio G90T will have a close call on winning this.
Currently, the MediaTek Dimensity 800 is so new that no benchmarks are yet available, neither AnTuTu nor GeekBench, but we do have Helio G90T AnTuTu scores: on the Redmi Note 8 Pro, this processor got around 280,000 points.
Now, talking about AI, the APU 3.0 (AI Processing Unit) presented by MediaTek has four cores consisting of three different core types, allowing the Dimensity 800 to provide up to 2.4 TOPS of AI performance. Furthermore, the APU HW design is also said to be more efficient and more powerful to enable more accurate AI camera results.
With that said, the Helio G90T is quite known for its dual MediaTek APU running @750MHz which outperforms that of Snapdragon 710. So, it does have an AI camera and features such as intelligent resource management.
Regarding the ISP (image signal processor) of the processor, the Dimensity 800 supports up to four cameras, with a maximum resolution of 64 megapixels. Similarly, artificial intelligence-based enhancements are promised to improve autofocus, exposure, white balance, and noise reduction. Also, 4K HDR recording is supported, as long as the mobile allows it.
That being said, the camera mount of the Helio G90T stands out for allowing single-lens cameras up to 64 megapixels with quad-pixel technology (merging 4 pixels into one for better lighting and details), or duals up to 24 megapixels + 16 megapixels. It also supports combinations of three and four lenses, with an integrated depth calculation engine and support for video recording at up to 240 fps.
As for connectivity, the Dimensity 800 5G SoC supports 5G with two carrier aggregation (2CC CA) for 30% wider high-speed layer coverage and a higher average throughput performance compared to other solutions that use a single carrier (1CC, no CA). Also, it includes multi-mode support for 2G/3G/4G, and also supports Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS).
Having said that, the Helio G90T comes with the modem Cat-12, 3xCA offering better upload and download speeds and incredible signal strength (4×4 MIMO). It’s Gigabit-class connectivity. Also, comes with Wifi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, and four positioned GPS + GLONASS + Beidou + Galileo. Dual Wifi antennas are also supported. Lastly, CorePilot, NeuroPilot, Pump Express, Tiny Sensor Hub, Integrated VoW, and HyperEngine Game Technology are present in this processor.
Regarding its price, and although there is still no information regarding phones that have the Dimensity 800, it is possible that the price of Dimensity 800 phones will be higher than Helio G90T because of the fact that it support 5G networking. If we see a smartphone featuring this SoC, it would be around $300 to $400.
Meanwhile, the Redmi Note 8 Pro, which inside has the Helio G90T processor, is sold in the world market along with a very attractive price tag of $250, taking the prize in this price category.
Concluding this MediaTek Dimensity 800 vs Helio G90T comparison, we must say that it depends on the user to select the processor that best suits its needs. That being said, and guided by this comparison, we still need the official benchmarks to confirm how good is the GPU of the new Dimensity 800. For now, we are considering the Dimensity 800 the winner because of lead in process, Artificial Intelligence performance and 5G connectivity.
