Snapdragon 765 vs Snapdragon 845

Snapdragon 765 vs Snapdragon 845 | Can a 2 Yrs Old SoC Beat SD 765?

Previously, we did a comparison of Snapdragon 765 vs Snapdragon 855, where the SD 855 was victorious. However, let’s compare the new SD 765 with SD 855’s previous generation, the Snapdragon 845. Can the two years old SoC survive against the most recent successor of Qualcomm’s 7-series? Let’s find out in this Snapdragon 765 vs Snapdragon 845 SoC comparison.

Snapdragon 765 vs Snapdragon 845 – Specs Sheet Comparison

Release Date

About release dates, it is obvious that the Snapdragon 765 has a great advantage. The SDN 765 came out a couple of days ago: on December 7. While there are still no devices carrying it, Qualcomm already said that the first phones to include it will be released during the first quarter of 2020. This advantage of dates means that the new mid-range oriented chip will include technology for 5G communications.

As for the Snapdragon 845, it was released 2 years back from now on December 6, 2017. It continued the same 10nm process from the SD 835 but had higher performance thanks to new Kyro 385 Gold cores configuration as well as the groundbreaking Adreno 630 GPU.

Snapdragon 765 vs Snapdragon 845 – Process Comparison

The difference in release dates becomes more noticeable when we compare the lithographs used in both SoCs. The Snapdragon 765 takes the lead with a 7nm LPP EUV process technology, while the Snapdragon 845 has just 10nm FinFET. The smaller size in the nanometers makes it possible to build smaller chips but with greater power, and the new EUV technology helps it manage energy consumption much better.

For the First Time, A 7 series SoC has a much advanced process technology than 8 series

Two years ago, the 10nm process was considered the best in the market, which meant that Smartphones that used that processor were at the forefront of technology. Although both processes are from Samsung, there is currently no fair comparison between a 7nm and a 10nm SoC, at least in terms of size and efficiency.

Snapdragon 765 vs Snapdragon 845 – CPU Comparison

Snapdragon 765 uses a Kyro 475 CPU based on a seemingly odd tri-cluster design (1+1+6) which is new in this 7 series. It hasn’t moved to Cortex-A77 but consists of the one high-performance processor which is the new Kryo Prime Cortex-A76 running @2.3GHz, another Cortex-A76 but based on Kryo Gold running @2.2GHz and six energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores running @1.8GHz.

On the other hand, the Snapdragon 845 is manufactured in a process technology of 10nm and has a custom octa-core CPU Kryo 385. This CPU distributes its eight cores in two groups, power in the main and energy savings in the secondary. So, we have 4 Cortex-A75 cores at a primary clock speed of 2.8GHz and 4 Cortex-A55 cores at a secondary clock speed of 1.8GHz.

Now in terms of raw performance, Snapdragon 765 is a slight improvement over Snapdragon 730 since it has a prime core while the rest cores remain the same. Combined with the 7nm EUV process let us say that it’s a 10% improvement in the CPU performance.

Qualcomm Planned To Make SD 765 The Most Power-Efficient SoC

Now, one has to make a decision to either move to a powerhouse SoC which is SD 845, and a highly intelligent energy-efficient SoC which is SD 765. One thing is for sure, SD 845 will perform much better under heavy load than SD 765 because of the higher core distribution along with the 2.8GHz frequency. Thus, SD 845’s single-core performance will be much better. However, being based on the 10nm process as well as having that much of frequency will make the SD 845 to consume more power and generate heat almost 3x the heat of SD 765. Thus, one might enjoy the high performance for a short time but performance spikes will start once the device starts getting hot.

More Higher Cores and Frequency Does Provide Incredible Performance But At The Expense of More Power Consumption and Heat Generation

Another thing is that SD 765 uses Kyro 475 CPU based on Cortex A76 cores meanwhile SD 845 because of being 2 years old uses the old Kyro 385 CPU based on Cortex A75. So, power utilization is much better in Cortex A76. If you put the overall performance of the CPU section, there will be only a slight performance difference (see AnTuTu Benchmark) which will increase with time because of SD 765 retaining the performance over time and SD 845 getting hot. The difference could have been enormous if Qualcomm decided to use the same dual-cluster design as of SD 845 or increase the numbers and frequency of high-performance cores in SD 765. However, making 7-series the powerhouse is not what the company planned but rather making the SoC the most energy-efficient SoC is what we witness.

Winner (power-efficiency and performance over time): Snapdragon 765

Winner (raw performance, performance under high load): Snapdragon 845

Snapdragon 765 vs Snapdragon 845 – GPU Comparison

Moving to the GPU part of this Snapdragon 765 vs Snapdragon 845 comparison, SD 765 has upgraded its GPU from Adreno 618 to 620. The 765’s Adreno 620 GPU has 20% better performance than the Adreno 618 in the 730. This is much better than the CPU improvement we just talked about in the above section.

Snapdragon 845 has a high-end Adreno 630 with a frequency of 710 MHz which is the third-best GPU of the company so far, being a leader in the industry.

Sd 765 gaming

If we compare the previous generation of SD 765 which was SD 730 with the SD 845, the GPU difference between Adreno 618 and Adreno 630 was almost 2x, where Adreno 630 had twice the graphical performance than Adreno 618. Even if SD 765 introduces Adreno 620 which is only 20% better than Adreno 618, SD 845 will still lead not by twice performance but still almost 40,000 points more on AnTuTu Benchmark (see AnTuTu section).

Snapdragon 845 (Adreno 630) in terms of graphics easily beats Snapdragon 765’s (Adreno 620).

However, in terms of energy-efficiency SD 765 promises to deliver the best power optimization in graphical performance under the same upper mid-end category. So, Snapdragon 845 might provide a short smooth higher fps gameplay but SD 765 will provide slightly smoother, low fps but longer gameplay.

Winner: Snapdragon 765

Price Comparison

Snapdragon 845 is not in production now so you will be getting a used one or rarely a new piece. If you are able to find a box packed SD 845 phone, it won’t cost higher than $200 to $300 depending on which phone it is Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or Pocophone F1.

Whereas, Snapdragon 765 which is the first upper-mid end 5G and 7nm EUV SoC might benefit the manufacturer and provide a reason for the price increase. Considering, that flagships such as Reno 2 featured the previous generation which was SD 730 and 730G, we might expect the price range to be around $400+ USD, depending on which manufacturer it is. Thus, in 2020 it is possible (but rare) to get an equal performing high-end smartphone of 2018 than 2020’s upper-mid 5G smartphone in terms of price.

Winner: Snapdragon 845
